Columbus allowed just five high-danger slot chances over its last four games, a dramatic improvement from early-season struggles. Assistant coach Steve McCarthy credits better stick positioning and shorter shifts.

The Jackets started staggering forwards higher in the defensive zone to deter cross-ice passes, forcing shooters into the perimeter.

McCarthy also emphasizes communication: “When our centermen call out assignments, everyone rotates in sync. It sounds simple, but trust is the biggest fix.”

The staff will keep monitoring net-front box-outs as the schedule tightens. “We can’t relax,” McCarthy said. “Details matter more once teams scout you.”

Expect Columbus to keep rolling video sessions where players grade each other’s positioning, maintaining accountability.
